Ivy May (Allen) Thorsen of Croydon, Maroondah City County, VIC Australia was born circa 1897 in Cobram, Moira Shire County to Rachel Margaret (Gibson) Allen and Alfred Frederick Allen. She had siblings Augusta May (Gibson) Franzi, Alfred William Allen, Rachel Harriet Margaret Allen, and Alice Annie Allen. Ivy Thorsen married George Alfred Thorsen in 1919, and died at age 86 years old on February 1, 1984 in Croydon, Maroondah City County.

In 1897, in the year that Ivy May Allen was born, in the January 22nd issue of "Engineering", the word "computer" was first used to refer to a mechanical calculation device. Previously - since the 17th century - the term computer meant "one who computes" and referred to human beings who worked with numbers.

In 1904, Ivy was just 7 years old when the "Teddy's Bear" was first produced. After seeing a political cartoon of President Teddy Roosevelt refusing to kill a clubbed and tied up bear, Jewish Russian immigrant Morris Michtom - who owned a candy shop and sold stuffed animals that he and his wife made at night at the store - made a "Teddy's Bear" and put it in his shop's window. The stuffed bears were an immediate success and Michtom and his wife went on to found the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co.
