    Jack Steele Curtis was born to Arthur Melvin Curtis (1886-1950) and Jeanette Steel (1886-1945) and had two siblings E.C. Curtis (1913-1996) and Betty Jeanette Curtis born in 1918. Jack was an incredibly accomplished individual and deeply devoted family man. He was a partner in the law firm of Farrington and Curtis, a member of the Greene County Bar Association, the Missouri Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Sertoma Club. He was also Springfield City Attorney, Project Attorney for the Relocation Authority in Roherer and McGehee, Arkansas from 1943 to 1944, and a Lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1944 to 1946. He served as State Senator (30th District) from 1954 to 1970. He was the Minority Floor Leader in the 71st and 73rd General Assembly. During his State Senate tenure, he served on the Missouri Atomic Energy Commission; the Coordinating Commission for Handicapped as Chairman; and the World's Fair Commission. He received the St. Louis Globe Democrat Award for greatest growth in Leadership from 1959 to 1960. He was Chairman of the Missouri State Highway Commission from February, 1973 to February, 1978 and Vice Chairman of the Missouri State Highway Commission from February, 1978 to December, 1979.

    Jack was a member of the Board of Directors of the Visiting Nurses Association and the Cerebral Palsy Association, a member of Hickory Hills Country Club, a member of the Board of Directors of the Paul Mueller Company, an Elder of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, a former member of the Board of Directors of Boatmen's Union National Bank, Boatmen's Springfield National Bank and the Wright County Bank. He and his wife Helen created the Jack and Helen Curtis Fund which benefits children at the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.

    The following appeared in The Springfield News-Leader in Springfield Missouri on Sunday April 21st 2002: Jack Steele Curtis was born in Hartville, Mo. on March 25, 1912. He passed away on April 20, 2002. He was the son of Arthur Melvin and Jeanette Steele Curtis. Jack attended grade school in Hartville, Mo., and after moving to Springfield, attended the Springfield Public Schools. He graduated from Drury College in 1932 and from the University of Missouri School of Law in 1935. On September 18, 1938, Jack married Helen Stamate, beginning a 62 year love affair which totally consumed and totally satisfied each of them. To their union, one child was born, Nancy Curtis Knauer. Jack is survived by his daughter, Nancy; his son-in-law, Link Knauer; three grandchildren, Sara Ann Knauer, Springfield, Mo., Patrick Curtis Knauer, Austin, Texas, and Mary Bethany Knauer, Springfield, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. E.C. Curtis; and several nieces and nephews. Jack was a partner in the law firm of Farrington and Curtis from 1935 onward. He was a member of the Greene County Bar Association, the Missouri Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Sertoma Club. Jack was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Visiting Nurses Association and the Cerebral Palsy Association. He was a member of Hickory Hills Country Club, a long serving member of the Board of Directors of the Paul Mueller Company, an Elder of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, a former member of the Board of Directors of Boatmen's Union National Bank, Boatmen's Springfield National Bank and the Wright County Bank. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Gorman-Schaprf Funeral Home. Reverend Gary Stratman will conduct a memorial service in First and Calvary Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2002. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jack and Helen Curtis Fund (benefiting children) at the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.
