Jacob Hockett 1841 - 1916

Jacob Hockett was born on March 1, 1841 in Henry County, Iowa United States to John Hockett and Matilda Hockett. He married Ruth Hockett in 1861, and they were married until Ruth's death on May 4, 1880. They had children William S. Hockett, Frank Lesley Hockett, Harrey J. Hockett, Fredrick Arthur Hockett, and Bert Hockett. He married Emma J. Hockett in 1885, and they were married until Jacob's death on October 11, 1916. They had children Laura Esther Duvall, Josephine R. Townsend, Ralph Edmond Hockett, Hazel Louise Dixon, Myrtle Abby Otto, Velma Leona Huling, and Verden Lee Hockett.

In 1841, in the year that Jacob Hockett was born, on February 4th, James Morris wrote about Groundhog Day in his diary - the first known reference to the day in North America. He wrote: "Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate."
