Jacob resided in Davidson County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Company H, 48th North Carolina Infantry at the age of 25 on March 17, 1862. Mustered in as Sergeant. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia with “finger shot off”. Place and date wounded not reported. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Reported present in September-October 1862. Reduced to ranks in November 1862-February 1863. Reported present or accounted for on surviving company muster rolls for the period January 1863 through March 1864. Died in hospital in Richmond, Virginia on April 17, 1864 of pneumonia. Burial records for Hollywood Cemetery and Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond have been checked but there is no record of him in either cemetery.
