Jacques Negru Accused By Miss Ballinger of Assault.
On the charge of assaulting and beating Miss Elizabeth Ballinger, who has a boarding house at 1522 McCulloh Street, Jacques Negru, a Belgian, 35 years old, one of her boarders, was tried yesterday afternoon before Magistrate Tyson, at the Northwestern Police Station, and fined $50 and costs.
Negru was defended by Mr. Alexander T. Leftwich, the Belgian Consul, who made a strong plea for him and produced evidence of his good character. He is an electrical engineer and a member of numerous electrical societies. Miss Ballinger testified Negru went to her house a week ago. His wife is in Belgium and dangerously ill. On Monday night, she testified, he sat with her for a while on the front steps of the house. At 10 o'clock, she said, he left her, saying he was going to retire. She went to her room half an hour later, where she found Negru. His arrest followed.
Negru said he remembered nothing after falling asleep sitting in a chair in his room and denied all knowledge of the assault
