  • Obituary

Article in "Nurmurkah Leader" newspaper dated 28 November 1949 The district lost one of its earliest pioneers when the death occurred of Mr James Hay. The late Mr Hay was born at sea on the way to Australia 90 years ago last March. In 1877, when 18 years of age, he selected land at Baulkamaugh, and at intervals between clearing the selection he worked in shearing sheds at 1 pound per week. Gradually the farm took shape, and in 1884 Mr Hay married Miss Rachael Kellas, of Picola, thus united two families the younger members of which attended the school at Piper's Creek. The young couple endured more than the usual hardships and Mr Hay relished telling the story of going four miles for a nurse to attend Mrs Hay in the birth of one of her children. Mr Hay carted water for domestic use from the old station dam south of Katunga. The fact that one day he found a man drowned in the dam was a blow but there was no alternative but to use the water. Mr Hay used to ride on a draught horse to Wunghmu to buy meat as a change from kangaroo. He carted wheat to Echuca and prior to harvest used to cut the "tracks"{ with a scythe. In 1940 he and Mrs Hay retired to Nurmurkah where Mrs Hay died about four years ago. A little later he disposed of his home ad lived with various members of his family. He was a very active man even after he had reached a goodly age, and as a prominent member of the Nurmurkah Agricultural Society rarely missing a working bee. Surviving their father are Ethel (Mrs Miller, Albury), Bert (Cobram), Amy (Mrs Nixon, Corowa), Ruby (Mrs Block, Camberwell), Les (Cobram), Florence (Mrs Fawcett, Tallygaroopna), Myrtle Lillian (Mrs Baker, Coolamon, NSW), Wilfred (Mathoura), and Jean (Mrs Christie, Brighton). The funeral went to the Nurmurkah Cemetery on Wednesday, when the service was conducted by the Rev. G. Lawson.
