He was in a relationship with Mary Eliza (Griffiths) Bolton beginning 1899, and had children Eileen Margaret Bolton, Johanna Mary Bolton, Doris Anne Bolton, Brigid Constance Bolton, and William Patrick Bolton. James Bolton died at age 72 years old on February 16, 1936 in Glenlyon.
