  • Military Service

    Burl proudly served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army, dedicating his commitment from February 1947 to September 1952. His journey in the military began with basic training at Fort Ord, Monterey, CA, where he honed the essential skills and discipline required for Army life. Following his initial training, Burl was assigned to the 38th Gun Battalion stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. Later in his service, he found himself a member of the 3rd Armored Cavalry at Fort Meade, MD, where he continued to grow as a soldier. However, his greatest test came when he was deployed to Korea. Burl's division played a pivotal role in defending the Pusan Perimeter, a critical battlefront during the Korean War. During this time, they undertook a daring mission to bridge the Imjin River, a step toward initiating the Armistice talks that aimed to bring an end to the conflict. Tragically, the bridge they constructed collapsed, leaving Burl and his comrades from the Company stranded on the communist side. In a remarkable rescue operation, helicopters swooped in to retrieve Burl and his fellow soldiers, ensuring their safe return. Burl eventually made it back to the United States in January 1952, following his harrowing experience in Korea. Upon his return, he was stationed at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas, where he continued to serve until his honorable discharge in September 1952. Burl's service to his country, marked by dedication and bravery, stands as a testament to the sacrifices made by countless soldiers during times of conflict, and his resilience in the face of adversity will always be remembered with gratitude.

The couple had four children together including a daughter Janice Marie Notgrass (1954-2018). After her passing, James re married on February 5, 1995 to Laura M Raschke in Martin, Texas, USA. ODESSA, TEXAS James "Burl" Notgrass, 90, died on January 11, 2018 in Odessa, TX.
Burl was born on September 20, 1927 in Eastland, TX to James Gordon Notgrass and Rosa Mae Williams Notgrass.

He graduated from Courtney High School in 1946. He married Delma "Tanice" Peterson on May 2, 1953 in Stanton, 'TX. They had four children. Janice died on December 7,1994. Burl married Laura Baker on February 25, 1995 in Stanton, TX.

Burl worked for Sewell Ford and Joe White Lincoln Mercury as an auto mechanic and shop foreman for almost 50 cars before retiring in 1996. Burl loved hunting, fishing, fixing anything that was broken or needed improvement, his church, and above all his family.

Burl served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army from February 1947 through September 1952. His basic training was at Fort Ord, Monterey, CA. Later he was assigned to the 38th Gun Battalion at Fort Bliss in El Paso. Still later he was assigned to the 3rd Armored Calvary at Fort Meade, MD, before he was sent to Korea. Burl's division participated in the defense of the Pusan Perimeter.

They attempted to bridge the Imjin River to start the Armistice talks that would end the war. However, the bridge collapsed. Burl and others from the Company were stranded on the communist side and had to be rescued by helicopters. He returned to the U.S. in Tanu-ary 1952 and was stationed at Fort Hood in Killeen, TX until his discharge in September 1952.

He is survived by his wife Laura Notgrass of Stanton, two daughters Jan Findley of Odessa, TX, Carolyn McConnell and her husband Craig of Roseville, CA, two sons Nathan Not-grass and his wife Haley of Farmington, NM, and Steve Notgrass and his wife Terri of Odessa, TX. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, one great grandchild due in June, two brothers, three sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Burl's care-giver, Rita Steel, for her unwavering love and care, Hospice, long time Pastor Clydel Chapman and their church family at Northside Baptist Church. They have truly been a blessing to not only Burl but also to the entire Notgrass family.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Home in Odessa, TX. A celebration of his life will take place at Northside Baptist Church, 100 W. 50th Street, Odessa, TX on Mon-day, January 15, 2018 at 1:00 pm and will be followed by a graveside service at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa, TX. Arrangements are under the direction of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Home in Odessa, TX.
