James Ernest Quick of Fitzroy, City of Yarra County, VIC Australia was born on March 28, 1898 in Carisbrook to Emily Ann (Blackney) Quick and Richard Quick. He had siblings Lilly May (Quick) Barned, Alice Matilda Quick, James Thomas Quick, Emily Quick, Alfred Thomas Quick, Huldah Mary (Quick) Barned, Jane Williams Quick, and Richard Quick Jr.. James Quick married Thetis May Philp in 1925, and died at age 79 years old on June 24, 1977 in Fitzroy.

In 1898, in the year that James Ernest "Jim" Quick was born, on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.

In 1939, at the age of 41 years old, James was alive when on the 1st of September, Nazi Germany invaded Poland. On September 17th, the Soviet Union invaded Poland as well. Poland expected help from France and the United Kingdom, since they had a pact with both. But no help came. By October 6th, the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany held full control of the previously Polish lands. Eventually, the invasion of Poland lead to World War II.
