James Frederick Merrillees. M.D. was born in 1866 in Eganstown, Hepburn Shire County, VIC Australia to John Stewart Merrillees and Elizabeth (Edwards) Merrillees, and had siblings Edward William Merrillees, Crichton Raoul Merrillees, Florence Elizabeth Merrillees, Herbert Delintella Merrillees, Ernest Arthur Merrillees, and Bertram Cecil Merrillees. He was in a relationship with Hulda Benedicta (Challman) Merrillees, and had children John Challman Merrillees and Jocelyn Elizabeth (Merrillees) Ashton. James Merrillees. died at age 67 years old in 1933, and was buried at Roma Cemetery in Roma, Maranoa Regional County, Queensland.

In 1866, in the year that James Frederick Merrillees M.D. was born, Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, businessman, and philanthropist Alfred Nobel invented dynamite in Germany. During his lifetime he held 355 patents, of which dynamite was the most famous. He also established the Nobel Prizes in his will.

In 1884, James was 18 years old when on December 6th, the Washington Monument was completed. Building began in 1848 but was stopped because of lack of funds and also due to the Civil War. It would be dedicated in 1885. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest structure in the world.
