John Challman Merrillees was born in 1902 to James Frederick Merrillees M.D. and Hulda Benedicta (Challman) Merrillees, and had a sister Jocelyn Elizabeth (Merrillees) Ashton. He married Edna (Carr) Merrillees, and had a child Robert Merrillees. John Merrillees died at age 71 years old on May 13, 1974 in Sydney, NSW Australia, and was buried at Northern Suburbs Memorial Gardens and Crematorium 199 Delhi Rd, in North Ryde, City of Ryde County.

In 1920, when he was 18 years old, on January 1, over 6000 people were arrested and put in prison because they were suspected of being communists. . Many had to be released in a few weeks and only 3 guns were found in their homes. The U.S. Department of Justice "red hunt" netted thousands of "radicals" and suspected "communists" and aliens were deported. But the "hunt" ended after Attorney General Palmer forecast a massive radical uprising on May Day and the day passed without incident.
