    The Weekly Times, Melbourne. 10th January 1882. MARRIAGES. HOPE. - BOAKE. On the 25th May, at Trinity Church, Balaclava, by the Ven. Archdeacon Stretch, assisted by the Rev. G. W. Torrance, Mus. Doc., James Hassall, eldest son of George Hope, Esq., of Darriwill, to Emily, second daughter of the late Rev. Barcroft Boake, D.D.

In 1856, in the year that James Hassall Hope was born, on March 31st, The Treaty of Paris was signed by the Russian Empire and the allied forces of the Ottoman Empire, the British Empire, the French Empire, and the Kingdom of Sardinia. The Treaty ended the Crimean War which had begun almost 3 years earlier.

In 1864, James was only 8 years old when on February 25th, the first prisoners arrived at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Andersonville became notorious for the conditions that Union prisoners endured. 500 prisoners had left from Richmond, Virginia the week before - eventually 13,000 prisoners would die at the prison.
