  • Nationality & Locations

The family story is that our Boggs line once had the last name "Livingston", but our Boggs descendant (unknown) left the family and used the name "Boggs", instead...this has always been unproven, and mostly unbelieved, until the DNA testing done on several Boggs cousins with several Livingston family members... Haplogroup R1b1b2 From: "Andrew and Inge" Subject: RE: Using DNA to check the Livingston story Date: Fri, 26 May 2006 13:55:32 +0200 We can now compare more Livingstons and Boggs from the two seemingly related groups, and we can compare 49 markers. There are 4 one-step differences between what appear to be the most common DNA signatures in these two families today. We hope to be able to compare 67 markers in coming months. The general tendency is an ever strengthening feeling that we have proven that there is a link of some kind. While we clearly still have not shaken off all doubt, 37/39 is an extremely close match, and would not normally be considered a coincidence, even without the family story of Livingston links which many Boggs families have. Regards Andrew Lancaster Livingston/Boggs DNA project The second Boggs profile is found in two participants from the James L Boggs line of Kentucky. This profile is aligned with a single Bogue 11participant (27 of 28 markers). In this case it appears that the Boggs and Bogue lines may be connected. This line also has roots in Scotland.

  • Military Service

Date of birth as per 'Declaration for Pension' dated May, 1907 and testified to by James Boggs as date he was born...also, location verified by his military papers and statements. From the War Department, Adjutant General's Office, document # 395094, dated 12/27/1882; it is stated that James H. Boggs, a musician of Company B, 14th Regiment of the KY Infantry Volunteers (Union Army) was enrolled on the 10th day of October, 1861, at Louisa, Kentucky, for 3 years, and is reported on Muster roll. James was in the Hospital during the Civil War in Chattanooga TN, & Nashville, TN. Suffered an illness while on active duty in Atlanta, GA, on 8/1/1864, resulting in required Hospitalization. Claim filed in Elliott Co., KY. Per James in the Department of Interior, Bureau of Pensions papers he filled out, he and Matilda Lyon in Elliott County, KY in 1848, and were married by James Fugett. James states that there is a record of the marriage in the Clerk's office in Louisa, KY. He signed and dated the form May 4, 1898. Per "Declaration for Pension" State of Kentucky, County of Lawrence: " On this 27th day of May, one thousand nine hundred and seven personally appeared before me, a Deputy County Clerk, within and for the County and State aforesaid, James H. Boggs, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is 77 years of age, and a resident of Sacred Wind, County of Lawrence, State of Kentucky, and that he is the identical person who was enrolled at Louise, KY under the name of James H. Boggs on the 10 day of October, 1861, as a Private, in Co. B, 14th Ky volunteer Infantry, and after served as corporal in the service of the United States, in the Civil war, and was HONORABLY DISCHARGED at Louisa, KY, on the 31st day of January, 1865. That he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States otherwise under the provisions of the act of February 6, 1907. That his post-office address is Sacred Wind, County of Lawrence, State of Kentucky. (signed, James H. Boggs) Attest: 1) Dick Sturgill 2) Deputy of Co. Clerk Also personally appeared L.F. Boggs, residing in Sacred Wind, KY and Archie Ison, residing in Sacred Wind, persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who, being by me duly sworn, say that they were present and saw James H. Boggs, the claimant, sign his name to the foregoing declarations; that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of the claimant and their acquaintance with him of 45 years and 20 years, respectively, that he is the identical person he represents himself to be, and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. The certificate signed by L.F. Boggs, and accepted with a "validity" stamp on 7/6/1907. Copy of the 'Drop Order' from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Pensions, Finance Division, date 6/5/1909: James H. Boggs, certificate member 285685, Division B14, KY Infantry, US Pension Agent in Louisville, KY was 'instructed to drop the aforementioned pension member from the roll as he died on May 16, 1909. Per the 'Drop Order', James had been receiving $20/month to May 4th, 1909. James H. Boggs of Lawrence County, Kentucky is noted as a 31 year old enlisted soldier, in Company B, of the Union 14th Kentucky Infantry Regiment, USA. James is shown as both a Musician (I think it says "fifer") and as a Corporal to which he was promoted in 1863. Like most Civil War soldiers, James saw his share of illnesses. He was reported as being "sick in hospital" a few times, in Lawrence Co., KY, Knoxville, TN, and at Marietta, Georgia. Corporal Boggs enlisted on October 1861. At some point in his service, James was a Prisoner of War in the hands of Confederate troops. This is evident because on one particular "muster-roll call", he was listed as "paroled", which is a clear reference to a soldier who has become a POW, then been released on his "parole", This meant that the soldier could not take up arms again against enemy forces until he was properly "exchanged". This could occur when the Commands of both sides agreed to return certain troops back to duty in an "exchange". Probably more often than not, the troops were unceremoniously returned to duty anyway, when their commanders declared the paroles to be simply "invalid", and called the paroled troops back to service, often from their homes. On another card in his CMSR, it indicates that James has a POW record but gives no further information - this may be referring to the above "muster roll" record. The 14th KY Infantry was reportedly a disciplined regiment with a fine combat record. As an aside, and just a note to help confirm this soldier's identity, on James' daughter Eliza Jane's eventual death record years later, it lists the birthplace of her father as being "Lawrence County Ky".
