James H. Boggs of Lawrence County, Kentucky is noted as a 31 year old enlisted soldier, in Company B, of the Union 14th Kentucky Infantry Regiment, USA. James is shown as both a Musician (I think it says "fifer") and as a Corporal to which he was promoted in 1863. Like most Civil War soldiers, James saw his share of illnesses. He was reported as being "sick in hospital" a few times, in Lawrence Co., KY, Knoxville, TN, and at Marietta, Georgia.
Corporal Boggs enlisted on October 1861. At some point in his service, James was a Prisoner of War in the hands of Confederate troops. This is evident because on one particular "muster-roll call", he was listed as "paroled", which is a clear reference to a soldier who has become a POW, then been released on his "parole", This meant that the soldier could not take up arms again against enemy forces until he was properly "exchanged". This could occur when the Commands of both sides agreed to return certain troops back to duty in an "exchange". Probably more often than not, the troops were unceremoniously returned to duty anyway, when their commanders declared the paroles to be simply "invalid", and called the paroled troops back to service, often from their homes. On another card in his CMSR, it indicates that James has a POW record but gives no further information - this may be referring to the above "muster roll" record.
The 14th KY Infantry was reportedly a disciplined regiment with a fine combat record.
As an aside, and just a note to help confirm this soldier's identity, on James' daughter Eliza Jane's eventual death record years later, it lists the birthplace of her father as being "Lawrence County Ky".
