He was married to Margaret Jane (Mclean) Cumper, and had children George Cumper, Julia Cumper, Charles Cumper, Margaret Jane Cumper, James Hinten Cumper, John Hinten Cumper, Richard Cumper, and Alexander Cumper. James Cumper died at age 60 years old on January 13, 1898 in Dunolly, VIC Australia.

    John Hinton Cumper was born in December of 1837 in Beachley, Gloucestershire, England to parents James Cumper (1808-1876) and Hester Morgan (1813-1887). He had siblings Ann, George, Henry John, Julia, Emma Jane, Charles, Oliver, Louisa, and Danny Cumper. He was baptized on December 31, 1837 as a Hinton. He later changed his name to John Hinton Cumper many years after arriving in Victoria, Australia but was then known locally as Jack. He went by many name variations. Cumper worked as a sailor and a miner/mine managaer. He then immigrated to Australia and married Margaret Jane McLean (1849-1926) in 1869 in Maryborough, Victoria, Australia. They had children together; George (1866-1923), Julia (1868-1951), Charles (1870-1930), Annie (1872-1947), Mary (1875-1916), Margaret Jane (1878-1945), James (1881-1939), John Hinton (1883-1961), Richard (1886-1944) and Alexander Cumper (1888-1970).

    According to a newspaper obituary, Hinton first visited Australia as early as 1851 on one of his early voyages as a seaman. If the story is true, he would have been only 13 or 14 and a ship's apprentice. In the late 1860's he lived in Chinaman's Flat, a mining settlement near Maryborough. John lived in Broadway, Dunolly, Victoria, Australia for most of his life. The house he lived on was on the corner of Broadway and Hardy Street. Broadway is the main road through Dunolly. It was originally a shop/store and stood until the 1970's when it was demolished by his grandson Alec Cumper. It was a building that dated back to the mid 1850's.
