Richard Cumper of Dunolly Australia was born in 1886 to Margaret Jane (Mclean) Cumper and James "Jack" Hinton Cumper. He had siblings Julia Cumper, Margaret Jane Cumper, James Hinten Cumper, George Cumper, Charles Cumper, John Hinten Cumper, and Alexander Cumper. Richard Cumper died at age 58 years old in 1944 in Dunolly.

In 1886, in the year that Richard Cumper was born, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.

In 1904, at the age of 18 years old, Richard was alive when the United States acquired the Panama Canal Zone. Now an unincorporated territory of the U.S., the Canal Zone had been previously held by the French, who were constructing a canal. The U.S. took over the construction of the Panama Canal and it was finally finished in 1914, when it was opened to commercial shipping. The United States held the Canal Zone until 1979.
