James Nelson Gallagher of Hillsboro, Oregon United States was born on December 17, 1851 in Jeffersonville, IN. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Youman on September 20, 1878 in Clarinda, Page County, Iowa and they later divorced on April 4, 1905 in Mills County. He had children Dora America Smith, Mary Elizabeth Gallagher, Laura Grace Thornton, Amos Uriah Gallagher, and John Emery Gallagher. James Gallagher died at age 80 years old on December 27, 1931 in Hillsboro, OR.

Because the California Gold Rush had caused many Australians to emigrate to California, Australia decided that the gold found in Australia should be publicized, rather than suppressing the news as earlier finds had been.
