James Samuel Bennett 1864 - 1941

James Samuel Bennett of Charlton, Buloke Shire County, VIC Australia was born in 1864 in Geelong, Greater Geelong City County to John Bennett and Elizabeth Frances Gullick Bennett. He had siblings Elizabeth Bennett Wilkin, Ann Bennett Fraser, William John Bennett, Emma Caroline Bennett, Thomas Edward Bennett, George Matthew Bennett, and Joshua Charles Bennett. He married Mary Ann (Mcgowan) Bennett in 1889, and had a child Beatrice Ann Bennett. James Bennett died at age 77 years old in 1941 in Charlton, Buloke Shire County.

In 1864, in the year that James Samuel Bennett was born, on February 25th, the first prisoners arrived at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Andersonville became notorious for the conditions that Union prisoners endured. 500 prisoners had left from Richmond, Virginia the week before - eventually 13,000 prisoners would die at the prison.

In 1881, by the time he was 17 years old, on April 28th, Billy the Kid escaped from the Lincoln County Jail in New Mexico. He killed James Bell and Robert Ollinger in the escape and then stole a horse and rode out of town. On July 14th, Pat Garrett shot and killed Billy the Kid in Billy's friend's home near Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
