James Thompson 1864 - 1914

James Thompson of Mdura Australia was born in 1864 to James Thomson and Catherine Johnson Thompson. He had siblings Alexander Donald Thomson, David William Thompson, Elizabeth Florence (Thomson) Minns, Alexander Donald Thompson, Thomas William Thomson, George Johnson Thompson, and James Hain Thomson. James Thompson died at age 50 years old in 1914 in Mdura.

In 1864, in the year that James Thompson was born, on June 15th, Arlington National Cemetery was created in Arlington Virginia. 200 acres from the grounds of Robert E. Lee's home were set aside to be a military cemetery. The home and grounds had been in Lee's wife's family - she was a great-granddaughter of Martha Washington.

In 1874, at the age of just 10 years old, James was alive when on September 14th, the Battle of Liberty Place occurred in New Orleans - the capital of Louisiana. Some members of the previous Confederate Army assembled for the purpose of "driving the usurpers from power" and the Republican Governor - William P. Kellogg - was physically driven from his office. The former Confederates temporarily replaced him with (the former) Democratic Governor John McEnery. Federal forces arrived, put down the insurrection, and five days later the legally elected government was restored.
