He had siblings Isabella (Thwaites) Galbraith, Mary Ann (Thwaites) James, Ethel Thwaites Fitzpatrick, Harriet Eva (Thwaites) Robson, Alfred James Thwaites, William John Thwaites, and Alice Annie (Thwaites) Eades. He married Alice Germaine Thwaites in 1898, and had children Ernestine Alberta Thwaites, Vic Alice Thwaites, John Germaine Thwaites, Grace Isabella Thwaites, and James William Thwaites. James Thwaites died at age 54 years old on August 6, 1927 in East Melbourne, City of Melbourne County.
