Jane Bezzell (Phillips) Lord 1841 - 1925

Jane Bezzell (Phillips) Lord was born in April 1841 in Devon County, England United Kingdom to Henry Phillips and Charlotte Bezzell, and had siblings Charles Phillips, Amanda Phillips, and Edwin Phillips. She married Robert Pulman Lord in 1860, and they were married until death separated them. She had children Bessie (Lord) Roberts, Minnie Lord, and Jenny (Lord) White. Jane Lord died at age 84 years old on June 4, 1925 in Brunswick, Moreland City County, VIC Australia, and was buried at Melbourne General Cemetery, College Cres, in Parkville, Melbourne City County.

In 1841, in the year that Jane Bezzell (Phillips) Lord was born, on February 4th, James Morris wrote about Groundhog Day in his diary - the first known reference to the day in North America. He wrote: "Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate."
