  • Introduction

    Janet was born on May 1, 1932 to Frank E Forbes and Elizabeth Koehler in Jamaica, New York and was her parent's only child. She attended Sewanhaka High School and was involved with French Club and Gamma Hi-Y, a philanthropic and social club at school. In 1959 she married Carl P. Eiler in Manhattan, New York City, New York, and they had one child together, Betsy Johnston. She was a school teacher for the Island Trees Public Schools in Long Island and continued her philanthropic efforts started in high school by volunteering and spending her time with family and friends. She was an avid member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Drums, where she served as the financial secretary and volunteered at Eckley Miners' Village, a local museum. Janet loved spending time at her home on Lake Nuangola where she died unexpectedly on August 3, 2005. Even in death, she was philanthropic with the family requesting donations in honor of Janet to various organizations including her church, miner's village, and more.     Published Friday August 5, 2005 in the Standard-Speaker Newspaper (Hazelton, PA) and the Times Leader (Wilkes-Barre, PA): Janet F. Eiler, 73, of Maple Drive, Drums, passed away suddenly Wednesday at her summer residence on Lake Nuangola. Born in Jamaica, NY, on May 1, 1932, she was the daughter of late Frank E. and Elizabeth K. (Kohler) Forbes. She spend the past 16 years in Drums, after moving from Belrose, Long Island. Mrs. Eiler was a retired school teacher for the Island Trees Public Schools in Long Island and was a member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Drums, where she served as the financial secretary. She also volunteered at Eckley Miners' Village and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She loved spending time at her home on Lake Nuangola. Preceding her death, in addition to her parents, was her husband, Carl P. Eiler, in 1988. Surviving are her daughter Betsy Johnston, and her husband, Ted Reichart, along with several cousins. Her funeral will be held Saturday at 10am in St. Paul's U.M. Church, Drums, with the Rev. Connie Stiller officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Wilkes-Barre. Friends may call tonight from 7-9 at Harman Funeral Homes and Crematory INC (East), 669 W. Butler Drive, Drums. In a loving tribute to Janet, the family requests donations to St. Paul's U.M. Church, American Cancer Society, Eckley Miners' Village, or a library of one's choice.

As listed in the yearbook, Gamma Hi-Y, under the supervision of Miss Olive Bucks endeavors to create, maintain, and extend, throughout the school and community, high standards of character. Each year, Gamma presents a one hundred dollar scholarship and gives dolls to orphans of a home in Jamaica. Several social and money raising events are also held.
