The Plenty Bridge Hotel, Heidelberg, Victoria
Jean Max Ludolff was residing at the Plenty Bridge Hotel in 1915 when his son, Hugo Ludolff first enlisted in the AIF as Albert Neil. I'm unsure if Jean Max Ludolff was the licensee at the time. He had managed other hotels in the past (The Scarborough Hotel, Sydney; The Prince of Wales Hotel). The Plenty Bridge Hotel was later purchased by a Golf Club in 1927.

Hugo Ludolff
A photo of Hugo Ludolff, the son of Jean Max Ludolff., who used the names Albert Neil and Bert Leahy when he enlisted in WW1. He was wounded in WW1 and taken prisoner by the Germans. After the war he did various jobs but his main work was as a steeplejack on tall chimneys, steeples , flagpoles etc.His photo appeared in several nnewspapers and magazines as the work of steeplejacks was extremely dangerous and there were many fatalities.

Hugo Ludolff used the name Bert Leahy from around 1916 until his death in 1962. His stepmothers' name was Martha Leahy. His birth mother was Alice Pearce (nee Sullivan) born in Tasmania and his father was a German immigrant named Jean Max Ludolff (mostly known as Max Ludolff )..Hugo mustn't have officially changed his name to Bert Leahy as when he did eventually marry Lena Penney he used his true name of Hugo Ludolff. Even the Army records indicate they never found the birth certificate for Bert Leahy and he always said he had no next of kin. His life was full of secrets. Perhaps because the Army would not have enlisted the son of a German immigrant....or... Perhaps as he had enlisted as Bert Leahy he needed to keep using this name to receive support at times from Veterans Affairs. He suffered chronic bronchitis, otitis media , kidney stones and later developed heart problems. His time spent as a German prisoner of war in WW1 would have been horrific and even though he kept going on unauthorised leave from the Army , he still contributed to the war effort. He was a friend of Albert Wilson and that is how he met the woman who had his child . I can't reveal her name due to privacy reasons as she is still living.

The partner of Jean Max Ludolff, Alice Pearce (nee Sullivan) & the mother of Hugo, Max and Robert Ludolff, I believe was the daughter of Thomas Sullivan and Anne Carton (also spelt Carten, Karten, Carter in some records). Thomas Sullivan & Anne were both Tasmanian convicts and there are records in the Tasmanian Archives. Thomas arrived in Tasmania 12th November, 1845 and Ann arrived from Ireland on the ship 'Earl Grey' 9th May, 1850. As convicts they asked for permission to marry 3 Sept,1850 and were married 18th Sept, 1850 at Bothwell, Tasmania. Perhaps there are descendants still in Tasmania as well as Victoria? I'm not sure where the tall, slim build originates from. Hugo Ludolff was 6ft tall & had a 'deviated septum' (crooked nose), characteristics we've inherited too. .

I have just found digital newspaper articles showing that Alice Pearce (who was living with jean Max Ludolff) and had 3 children to him, did apply for a divorce in 1892 when the laws changed saying that women could apply for a divorce on the grounds of desertion and an 'absentee' husband for more than 3 years. Her divorce was approved 2nd March, 1893 after her 3 children were born. They were all given the Ludolff name which shows Jean Max Ludolff was trying to do the right thing for the children.
