Jesse Drayer's History: 1877 - 1964

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Hi....my name is Cynthia Marie Drayer and I have fond memories of my Grandpa Jesse. I was 11 when he died, but I feel like I knew him well. At the age of 12 I started conducting genealogical research on the Drayer family and eventually I accumulated a great deal of information about the Drayer's and all of the women that they married. When I met my uncles and cousins, I obtained information to form accurate charts. The father and mother that raised me were Jesse Lyndon ("Lyn") Drayer and Aline Helen (Causkey) Harrington. They had one child, Donna Aline Drayer. I was adopted at the age of 2 years in 1955. I had been born in Los Angeles, CA, but we moved up to Portland, OR, when my father got a new job selling Farberware. His brother, Herman, was Vice President and his territory was west of the Mississippi River. My father had the NW section which included Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho, and part of Montana.

When the family was in Pennsylvania their name was spelt Dreher. Once they settled in Ohio, their name changed to Drayer. Peter b. 1780 - 1857. • Early Life & Education

As a youngster he was a farmer, first in Montgomery Co. and then Darke Co., Ohio. His highest education was 8th grade. The school that he graduated from was on the Drayer property in a brick schoolhouse. Eventually his sister, Arabelle, became the teacher. When I visited my grandfather, Jesse, in 1960, we were in an apartment garage near the main home on Pepper St., Los Angeles, CA. We were watching the nomination of John F. Kennedy in the Democratic Convention. I was 7 years old. Grandpa had his legs crossed and I noticed that he had a hole in his left shoe. I asked him why he had the hole and he gave the the following story. When he was 12 years old he was cutting logs when the ax slipped and cut his big toe almost off. He was provided the minimal medical help that was available at the time. His toe became deformed and started to bend downwards. The only way he could wear a shoe was to cut a hole in the bottom so that there would be room for his bent toe. Every Christmas Grandpa would give me and my sister, Donna, a silver dollar. I looked forward to this. I always knew a letter from grandpa had arrived because he wrote beautiful calligraphy with an old ink pen. I was an adopted child to the Drayer family, joining their household at the age of two. We went to California from Portland, Oregon, every year to visit family, and grandpa was always on our trip plans. My uncles, aunts and cousins usually joined us at grandpa's home. I can remember having photos taken of me and my sister with grandpa. He always threated me the same as all of his other grandchildren, and I loved him dearly. In the winter of 1964 I was getting ready to leave my home for the school bus when my father gave the sad news. Grandpa had died. I slammed the screen door onto the back of my right leg and it hurt all day. But nothing was as painful as the loss of grandpa Jesse. My father went to grandpa's funeral in California and came back with several items from his estate. One was a silver pocket watch. This was the watch that he used every day to run the street cars. This is what my father gave to me from Grandpa and I cherish it.

While in Dark Co., Ohio he met his future bride, Estella Markwith. [The Markwith Family were pioneers of Darke Co., OH]. They moved to Los Angeles, CA, and were married there 9/18/1905. He became a Street Car Conductor and supervisor for the Los Angeles Railway. Because he looked so much like Abraham Lincoln, he had the nickname "Honest Abe" He had the following siblings: Valentine ("Vol") Jacob, Mary Olive [Kurtz], John Herman (died young), Minnie [Albright] and Arabelle ("Belle") Amanda (never married). Minnie and Arabelle were twins. Jesse and Estella had 6 children: Paul James, Robert ("Bob") Emerson, Herman Sylvester, Jesse Lyndon ("Lyn"), William Dale ("Laddie"), and Henderson/David who died as an infant of Whooping Cough. When Henderson/David died Estella had a mental break down. She was placed into a sanatorium and never recovered. His sisters came out to California from Ohio to help during this time, but they were not able to stay long. The two older boys, Robert and Paul, were able to move out of the home and have their own lives, but Herman, Jesse and Laddie were placed into a boys home for several months. It formed a close bond that continued through their entire life. Jesse eventually brought his three youngest boys back home. The home where most of the boys were born was on Pepper Street in Los Angeles, CA. Robert was born in Ohio as his mother was visiting her relatives who lived in Darke County. Jesse lived on Pepper Street for most of his life, but eventually he needed more care and was placed into a retirement home. He developed Kidney Cancer and died at the age of 87.

2 Memories, Stories & Photos about Jesse

The Drayer family home and school house.
I was able to visit Ohio and Located the Drayer Family Home that was built by Peter Drayer. His son Daniel, grandson Daniel Sylvester, and great grand son, Jesse, lived on this property. The house had 6 window facing to the West and was made of brick. The current owners at the time where very nice and invited me into see the wood floors. The owners were so proud of all of the renovations that had done and the interior looked so great. I visualized all of these ancestors walking through the halls. They also had some paperwork and photos of a family reunion for the Drayer family. It was so exciting to see a photo of Peter and Elizabeth (Moyers/Meyers) Drayer
