In 1918, in the year that Joanna v Sanford was born, on November 1, an elevated train on the Brooklyn line of the subway - driven by an inexperienced operator because of a strike - tried to navigate a turn at 30mph. The limit on the curve was 6 mph. The 2nd and 3rd cars of the 5 car wooden train were badly damaged and at least 93 people were killed, making it the deadliest crash in New York subway history.
Did you know?
In 1931, at the age of just 13 years old, Joanna was alive when in March, “The Star Spangled Banner” officially became the national anthem by congressional resolution. Other songs had previously been used - among them, "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", "God Bless America", and "America the Beautiful". There was fierce debate about making "The Star Spangled Banner" the national anthem - Southerners and veterans organizations supported it, pacifists and educators opposed it.

The History of Locomotives
The steam engine made self-powered transportation possible - and our romance with trains began. James Watt (a Scotsman) patented the design for a steam locomotive in 1784 and his employee, William Murdoch, made a working model of a self-propelled steam carriage soon after. Then, in 1804, an Englishman made a full scale steam locomotive - and a new industry was born.
