Johanna Fiedler Dies at 65; Wrote of the Met Opera By Daniel E. Slotnik, June 4, 2011 Johanna Fiedler, a publicist who wrote tell-all books about the Metropolitan Opera and about growing up as the daughter of Arthur Fiedler, the conductor of the Boston Pops, died on May 27, 2011 at her home in Manhattan. She was 65. She had been ill for some time, her sister, Deborah Stiles, said. Ms. Fiedler drew on her experience as the chief press liaison for the Metropolitan Opera from 1975 to 1989 to write “Molto Agitato: The Mayhem Behind the Music” (2001). She wrote in the preface that the book was “an attempt to open up the Metropolitan’s world,” which she considered as insular as “the Kremlin or the Vatican.” Critics praised her vivid descriptions of events that occurred during her tenure, including an insightful account of the British director John Dexter’s stewardship of the Met and the 1980 murder of the violinist Helen Hagnes, who was found naked and bound in a ventilation shaft after disappearing during an intermission. But some critics complained that Ms. Fiedler was less candid than she could have been about other aspects of life at the Met. “Fiedler comes across as a decent, bright and perceptive observer who admires the Met and is not entirely comfortable relating all the gossip she knows her readers are counting on,” Anthony Tommasini wrote in The New York Times in 2001. “Her portrait of Arthur Fiedler is as unflinching as a Holbein or Whistler portrait,” Lawson Taitte wrote in The Times in 1994. “We are persuaded we see the renowned musician just as he was, every wrinkle and scowl line intact.” Johanna Fiedler was born on Sept. 17, 1945, in Boston. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1967. She studied both the piano and viola but never played professionally. She started her career as a public relations director for the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, then became the editor of programs for concerts for the New York Philharmonic before taking the job at the Met. In addition to her sister, Ms. Stiles, Ms. Fiedler is survived by a brother, Peter Fiedler.
