John Alex Raleigh Slack was born in 1874 at Sandhurst in Bendigo, Greater Bendigo City County, VIC Australia to John Slack and Malinda (Bird) Slack, and had a brother William Leonard Slack. He married Elizabeth Ellen (Bretherton) Slack, and had children Linda Jean (Slack) Ladner, Edna Young, Jack Slack, Roy Slack, Norman Slack, Beryl Stevenson, and Raymond Slack. John Slack died at age 77 years old in 1951 at Thornbury VIC, Australia in Thornbury, City of Darebin County.

In 1874, in the year that John Alex Raleigh Slack was born, on September 14th, the Battle of Liberty Place occurred in New Orleans - the capital of Louisiana. Some members of the previous Confederate Army assembled for the purpose of "driving the usurpers from power" and the Republican Governor - William P. Kellogg - was physically driven from his office. The former Confederates temporarily replaced him with (the former) Democratic Governor John McEnery. Federal forces arrived, put down the insurrection, and five days later the legally elected government was restored.

The Philippines objected to the Treaty of Paris, signed in 1898, that transferred possession of the Philippines from Spain to the U.S. Filipinos began a fight for independence and fighting between U.S. forces and those of the Philippine Republic broke out. On June 2nd, the Philippines officially declared war on the United States.
