John Auhl was born in 1872 in Bundoora, VIC Australia to Christopher Auhl and Fanny (Gerraty) Auhl, and had siblings Henry Auhl, Emily (Auhl) Gibson, Elizabeth Auhl, Margaret Mary Auhl, William Auhl, and Catherine Auhl. John Auhl died at age 86 years old on May 18, 1959, and was buried at Preston Cemetery in Bundoora, Darebin City County.

In 1872, in the year that John Auhl was born, on December 4th, the empty American ship Mary Celeste was found in the Atlantic Ocean. Still seaworthy, under partial sail, and with one lifeboat missing, what happened on her is still a mystery. Her cargo and provisions were intact and she was used as a cargo vessel for another 12 years but the people onboard were never seen again
