John Christopher Waters of Waterford, d. c. 1830, 1st married Anne Platt (of Cork) of Dutch descent in 1771 in the Cork and Ross Diocese. Son of George Waters and his wife Mary nee Waters, both of Killarney. George was a ship owner, trading between Cork and Lisbon, Portugal; at one stage he had as partner in the business, his cousin Dominick Waters (Brown Dominick) until their estrangement. However, years later they were reconciled. John Christopher had 3 sisters, Catherine, Mary, and Helen. His younger brother Adrian was lost in a shipwreck in Tramore Bay.
John Christopher was educated at the University of Salamanca in Spain, at one time the most important educational institution in Europe. He then settled in Waterford where he founded an Academy where many sons of families of the neighbouring Counties were educated. He used to lecture to them from a rostrum. John and Anne had 5 sons and 3 daughters. Their eldest son was George Waters of Crobally. Their second son, James, born 1775, a naval officer, (Lt. R.N.) captured by the French in a privateer, and imprisoned at Bitche in Alsace. He was killed in 1813 while attempting to escape. John Christopher’s fourth son was John Frederick, born 1778. John Christopher’s fifth son, Robert married Miss Ellen Downing, daughter of his father’s second wife by her first husband. After the death of Anne (Platt) John Christopher married 2nd Mrs Ellen Downing nee FitzGerald. They had no issue.
