A photo of John Clark (1785-1853) 'The Philosopher of Bridgwater' was an eccentric inventor and printer born in Grenton, Somerset to parents Thomas and Mary Clark. He died in Bridgwater, Somerset 1853 aged 68.
John Clark created 'The Eureka' an intricate automaton that was capable of writing latin poetry whilst playing the National Anthem. It was exhibited in the Egyptian Hall, Picadilly in 1845.
He was a cousin of Cyrus Clark (1801-1866) and James Clark (1811-1906) whose family have renovated 'The Eureka' which is now housed with the Alfred Gillet Trust in Street, Somerset.
