John Clouston Louttit 1855 - 1948

John Clouston Louttit of Geelong, Greater Geelong City County, VIC Australia was born in 1855 in Geelong to Jane Moar (Clouston) Louttit and John Louttit. He had a brother William Clouston Louttit. He married Mary (Barbour) Louttit in 1884, and had children John Harper Louttit, William Archibald Louttit, Albert Victor Louttit, Matilda Jane Louttit, Henry Arthur Louttit, Ivan Leonard Louttit, and Archie Keith Louttit. John Louttit died at age 92 years old on August 21, 1948 in Geelong, and was buried at Geelong Western Cemetery Minerva Rd, in Herne Hill.

In 1855, in the year that John Clouston Louttit was born, on March 3rd, Congress appropriated $30,000 to create the U.S. Camel Corps. The idea was to use camels as pack animals in the Southwest and 34 camels were bought. But the Army wasn't enthusiastic about the idea and after the Civil War the Camel Corps was entirely abandoned.

In 1868, when he was just 13 years old, on February 24th, three days after his attempt to dismiss United States Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton - who was opposed to Johnson's leniency towards the former Confederacy - the US House of Representatives voted (126 to 47) to impeach Andrew Johnson. Johnson was later acquitted in the Senate by one vote short of the required 2/3rds.Senators crossed party lines to keep Johnson as President.
