    Born to John B. Sr. (a farm laborer) and Lulu Bell (Burke) Cogswell, John Jr. had brothers Charles and Orendale "Bud", and sisters Betty, Geneva, Louise, Maxine, and Edith. After graduation from high school, he and his brother ran a gas station in their hometown. Later becoming a Phillips 66, they owned the station for 46 years. On his WW2 draft card registration, John said he was White, 18, born in Urbana, was a student and weighed 145 lbs at 5 ft 8 in. He had a ruddy complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. He named his father as next of kin. The VA records say that he enlisted on April 16, 1941.

    The News-Gazette Sept 12 2020 John B Cogswell, Jr., 80, of Champaign died at 1:45 a.m., Sept. 30, 2008 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Masonic services and funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Road, Urbana. Burial will be held at Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign. Visitation will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Mr. Cogswell was born April 16, 1928, in Urbana, a son of John B Cogswell Sr. and Lulu Burke Cogswell. Survivors include a brother, Charles Cogswell of Urbana; a sister, Betty Minyard of Champaign; and several nieces and nephews. He graduated from University High School in Urbana, and, along with his brother, Charles, owned and operated a service station in Urbana for 46 years, which later became Phillips 66. John was a life member of Western Star Lodge 240 A.F.& A.M., Champaign, and a member of the Chrysler 300 Club. He loved classic cars, gardening, taking care of his lawn, and he loved animals.
