J.D.L. Whitaker Dies, Aged 81
Veteran Lumber Man Refused To Go to Bed After Contracting Cold

Picture with caption
John Davis Love Whitaker, who at 81 still directed the orchestra at Lindsey Memorial Presbyterian Church and was the active representative of E.A. Stewart Lumber Co. of Beebe, Ark., died of pneumonia at 2:20 a.m. today at his home, 2028 Faxon.

John David Love Whitaker, in the lumber business of Memphis and the Tri-States for 33 years and father of Cornelius M. Whitaker, assistant wholesale manager of Standard Oil Co. died of pneumonia at 2:20 a.m. today at his home, 2028 Faxon. HE was 81 years old.

Still active in business as representative of the E.A. Stewart Lumber Co. of Beebe, Ark., Mr. Whitaker had refused to go to bed when he caught a cold three weeks ago. Under a physician's orders, he went to bed two weeks ago and made such a valiant fight for life, relatives thought he would recover.

A musician who had learned to play the violin as a boy, he had directed the orchestra at Lindsey Memorial Presbyterian Church for many years, retiring only two months ago. He was also active in Sunday School work of the church.

He was born in eastern Arkansas and spent his boyhood in Humboldt, Tenn. As a young man he was a telegraph operator at the railroad station in Greenfield, Tenn. From there he went to Como, Miss., and was depot agent 20 years there.

He came to Memphis 33 years ago, becoming an active worker in the old Court Avenue Presbyterian Church. Before it was merged into the present Lindsay Memorial, he directed the orchestra there, and founded the one at Lindsey.

Tho he had never taken any music lessons, this lover of music had not only gathered fine musicians for the church orchestra, but had formed a small orchestra in his own home, where each of his children played some musical instrument.

Of a generous, charitable nature, his home had been the center of social gatherings. Despite his years, his amazing vitality had made him seem much younger.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cornelia Ingraham Whitaker; two sons, C.M. and John L. Whitaker, Memphis; a daughter, Mrs. Burl McKinney, Henderson, Tenn.

Funeral arrangements with National Funeral Home in charge are incomplete. Burial will be in Henderson.
