John Denbigh Hope of Bdale Australia was born in 1866 to Hope Rob Cuthbertson Cameron and Catherine Elizabeth Hassall Hope. He had siblings Phillip Hope, Edgar Hope, John Denbigh Hope, Francis Hope, Robert Hope, Thomas Culbertson Hope, Marian Eliza Hope Cameron, and Annie Marsden Colles. John Hope died at age 78 years old in 1944 in Bdale.

New Yorker Henry Bergh was the first President of the Society and the leader in its creation. He later formed the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
