Did you know?
In 1814, in the year that John Edney was born, on September 14th, Francis Scott Key wrote what we now know as the lyrics of the Star-Spangled Banner while he watched the British attack on Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor. He originally wrote a poem titled "Defence of Fort M'Henry". The lyrics of the poem were then set to the tune of a popular English song. It wasn't until 1931 that the song became the official national anthem of the United States.

In 1827, by the time he was merely 13 years old, on May 25th, Romanian inventor Petrache Poenaru received a French patent for the invention of the first fountain pen with a replaceable ink cartridge. The fountain pen would make inkwells obsolete. Poenaru's patent used a barrel made from a large swan quill (part of the feather).
