In 1856, in the year that John Ford was born, on May 21st, Lawrence Kansas was ransacked and burned by pro-slavery forces. Called the "Sacking of Lawrence", it was part of the "Bleeding Kansas" war between pro-slavery and antislavery settlers.
In 1860, when he was just 4 years old, on December 20th, South Carolina seceded from the United States - the first state to do so. At the time, there were about 4 million people enslaved in the American South.
In 1883, John was 27 years old when on June 16th, children at a children's variety show in Victoria Hall began rushing the stage area and lobby for promised prizes. In the stampede, 183 children of the 1100 present - most of them 3 to 4 years old - were crushed and asphyxiated.
In 1919, at the age of 63 years old, John was alive when on January 6th, President Theodore Roosevelt died. Having gone to bed the previous night after being treated for breathing problems, the ex-President died in his sleep from a clot that had traveled to his lungs. He was 60. After a simple service, Roosevelt was buried on a hillside overlooking Oyster Bay.
In 1949, in the year of John Ford's passing, on January 25th, the first Emmy Awards (for television) were handed out in Los Angeles. Shirley Dinsdale won for the Most Outstanding Television Personality and Pantomime Quiz Time earned an Emmy for the Most Popular Television Program.
