John Francis Nistico was born on March 18, 1957 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut United States to Francis Joseph Nistico Jr. and Virginia (Pianka) Nistico, and had siblings Richard Paul Nistico, Francis Joseph Nistico III, Thomas Walter Nistico Sr., Louis Theodore Nistico, and Pamela Anne Nistico. He married Susan Carol Nistico in 1982 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, and they were married until John's death on July 8, 2019 in Carlsbad, San Diego County, California. He had children Caitlin Mary Nistico, John Francis Nistico Jr., and Michael David Nistico. John Nistico was buried on July 12, 2019 in San Diego.

In 1957, in the year that John Francis Nistico was born, on September 24th, the "Little Rock Nine" (nine African-American students) entered Little Rock High School. Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus had previously prevented the students from entering the school at the beginning of the term with the Arkansas National Guard - they blocked the door. President Eisenhower ordered federal troops - the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army - to guard the students and allow them entry.

In 1961, he was only 4 years old when on April 17th, about 1,000 CIA trained Cuban exiles invaded Cuba with the intention of igniting a rebellion and overthrowing Castro. They were defeated within three days. Although the operation began under Eisenhower, Kennedy approved it and the operation, named the Bay of Pigs for the beach where they landed, was a humiliation for the United States.
