John Gore Stewart 1857 - 1934

John Gore Stewart of Belfast Australia was born in 1857 in Belfast to George Stewart and Eliza Gore Stewart. He had siblings Edith Charlotte Stewart, George Stewart, Hellen Stewart, and George Stewart. John Stewart died at age 77 years old in 1934 in North Adelaide, South Australia.

  • Introduction

    John Gore was an engineer residing in Adelaide South Australia. He was in the Engineers department working with his brother Graham Stewart who held the position of Engineer-In-Chief. Graham passed away just after WWI and John Gore was promoted to Engineer-In-Chief. John Gore was noted for many engineering projects among these he was responsible for draining much of the South Australian farming lands to be productive and also oversaw the building of the locks on the Murray River. John Gore married Helena Annette Lovegrove and they had five children. Their son Donald Lovegrove married Nancy Jean Melville and they had two children. A daughter and a son John Melville Stewart who was born April 14th 1931. JMS spent his life in the Australian Army and upon his retirement accepted the position, Secretary-Superintendant, later to be changed to be in line with current day; General Manager of The Old Colonists Association of Victoria.

    John Gore’s father, George Stewart, sailed into Hobart Tasmania circa 1829, from Scotland. Where, after some time, George accepted a position in Sydney, New South Wales. George sailed to Sydney and accepted the position of Police Magistrate. From Sydney George then was moved to Goulburn where he met and married Eliza Gore. The Gore family were well known in the Naval services.
