John Gundry married Elizabeth Grigg in Redruth, Cornwall, in the United Kingdom when he was still a teen - he was 19 and Elizabeth was 20. They sailed to South Australia, arriving on 29/03/1857 on the ship 'The Royal Albert', carrying with them from Cornwall an oversize family bible that has been handed down through the generations and still survives, documenting the first few generations of this branch of the Gundry family as they spread out across Australia. John and his wife Elizabeth went on, from what can be gathered, to have over a dozen children who survived into adulthood. At the time of John's death in his early fifties, he owned 6 houses in Brunswick, which is now a gentrified inner suburb of Melbourne, the capital city of the Australian state of Victoria. This indicates that his family's efforts in the tin and gold mining and associated industries in South Australia and Victoria upon their arrival ended up being quite successful. John and Elizabeth's many descendants include their grand-daughter May Dahlberg, who was one of the first silent screen actresses in the US, partnering both professionally and personally with Stan Laurel across 1919-25, prior to the latter's association with Oliver Hardy.

We understand the Gundry family who migrated to Australia were religious 'non-conformists', specifically Methodists.
