Richard Henry Gundry of Brunswick, Victoria Australia was born in 1868 in Unley, City of Unley County, SA to John Gundry and Elizabeth Grigg Gundry. He had a brother Albert Octavus Gundry. He married Mary Ann (Grose), and had children Elsie Rose (Gundry), Richard John Gundry, and Ernest Henry Gundry. Richard Gundry died at age 54 years old in 1922 in Brunswick, Victoria.

In 1868, in the year that Richard Henry Gundry was born, on February 24th, three days after his attempt to dismiss United States Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton - who was opposed to Johnson's leniency towards the former Confederacy - the US House of Representatives voted (126 to 47) to impeach Andrew Johnson. Johnson was later acquitted in the Senate by one vote short of the required 2/3rds.Senators crossed party lines to keep Johnson as President.

In 1884, Richard was 16 years old when on May 1st, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions - a US association - first resolved that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labour from and after May 1, 1886, and that we recommend to labour organisations throughout this jurisdiction that they so direct their laws as to conform to this resolution by the time named." Previously, workdays would consist of 10 to 16 hours a day - 6 days a week. It would take years before the 8 hour workday became common practice - and longer before it became a law.
