    SAD FATALITY IN MORANG. BOY DRAGGED TO DEATH. John Henry Egan, aged 13, whose home is in Bundoora, was killed as the result of being thrown by a horse he was riding on Sunday afternoon. The boy was the only child of his widowed and invalid mother. He had been staying with his uncle Mr. A. E. Males, in Preston for some time, and had gone to spend the week-end at home with his mother. A companion had asked him to go with him for a ride on his pony, and the two boys were riding down Bolands lane, through Ryan's cutting. The Geelong Advertiser. 21st May 1928. - BOY KILLED. John Egan, 13, of Mernda, sustained a fractured skull today when thrown and dragged by a bolting horse on the Morang Tanks road, near his home. He was hurried to Dr. Day's surgery at Mernda, where he died an hour later without regaining consciousness . The body was conveyed to the City Morgue, and the Whittlesea police are making investigations.

EGAN. - On the 20th May ( result of accident ), Jack, dearly beloved son of Florrie ( nee Males ), and the late John Egan, 13 Emmaline street, Croxton, aged 12 years and 11 months. The Age, Melbourne. 22nd May 1928. EGAN ( nee Males). On the 20th May ( result of accident), Jack, of 13 Emmaline street, Croxton, the dearly loved grandson of of Ellen and the late Harry Males, late of North Carlton, the dearly loved nephew of Harry, Nellie ( Mrs. Goldsmith), Elsie ( Mrs. Johnson ), Bert, Ron, and the late Frank, who died on the 25th April, 1928; loved cousin of Florrie and Evelyn Goldsmith, Eva Johnston, Harry, Dulcie, Ronnie, Leslie, Valda, Betty, and Jean Males. Aged 12 years and 11 months. My little man, So bright a gleam, So dear a dream, So few the happy years, Gone the sunshine of my life. - Our little Jack.

In 1915, in the year that John Henry Egan was born, The Birth of a Nation opened in February. A silent film, it was the most ambitious film to date and is considered a classic. Three hours long, it starred Lillian Gish and was directed by D. W. Griffith. The movie was based on the book The Clansman and told the story of two families (one pro-Union and one pro-Confederate) and their relationship during the Civil War and Reconstruction. The KKK was shown as "a heroic force".

In 1920, Jack was only 5 years old when the Volstead Act became law. Formally called the National Prohibition Act, the Volstead Act enabled law enforcement agencies to carry out the 18th Amendment. It said that "no person shall manufacture, sell, barter, transport, import, export, deliver, or furnish any intoxicating liquor except as authorized by this act" and defined intoxicating liquor as any beverage containing more than 0.5% alcohol by volume.
