Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

John Henry Watmuff, born to Stephan and Elizabeth Vickerman Watmuff, was born in Manchester, but sailed as a free settler to Australia. There he was sent to the gold fields at the early age of twelve of thirteen. His sibling were Mary Taylor, Elizabeth Sara, Fredrick, Charles Bros, and Lucy.

John was bourn in Yorkshire, England, and moved to Australia when his Father, Stephen Watmuff, came for work. When John was only 12 or 13 years old, he was sent to work in the goldfield. Later on he settled in Mildura, Victoria.
  • Early Life & Education

Originally living on 21 York St, Cheetham Hill Manchester (according to a diary of John's), John moved to London as a young child. He recalls in one of his diaries that he was "bewildered at all the bustle and excitement I saw manifested in the streets whilst diving to our new home." His father was very unsuccessful in business and sought a new start in Australia, where they were of such low status that John and his brother were forced to become Hawkers until John was sent to gold-dig when he was 12 years old. I could not find much indication of education, but I know he was literate and of reasonable status when he was older.

  • Religious Beliefs

I don't think john was a Christian, at least not in his earlier life. He says in one of his diary's- "I take up the bible and read it sometimes as I would a work of fiction, its truly marvellous morality I think it is fine but rather Utopian..." however, it is possible he changed his views, as he did occasionally go to church.

In the 1980's someone wrote on the back of this photo it was John Henry Watmuff, but the signature on the back is nothing like his usual, possibly "King"?
