John Ivan Hopcraft 1884 - 1966

John Ivan Hopcraft of Caulfield Australia was born in 1884 in Dromana, Shire of Mornington Peninsula County, VIC to John Hopcraft and Annie Sarah Sawyer Hopcraft. John Hopcraft had siblings Annie Holtham (Hopcraft) Gault, James William Hopcraft, Sarah Lillian (Hopcraft) Wood, Sydney Cecil Ernest Leonard Hopcraft, Flora Helen (Hopcraft) Baldry, Richard Herbert Hopcraft, Nelson Victor Hopcraft, and Mary Emma (Hopcraft) Miall. He married Corella Louisa (Waghorn) Hopcraft in 1909. They had children Dorothy Corella Innocenca Hopcroft, Ronald Ivan Hopcraft, Clarence John Hopcraft, Frank Sydney Hopcraft, and William James Hopcraft. He would also marry Amy Patience Mullett in 1921. John Hopcraft died at age 82 years old in 1966 in Bentleigh, City of Glen Eira County.

In 1884, in the year that John Ivan Hopcraft was born, on May 1st, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions - a US association - first resolved that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labour from and after May 1, 1886, and that we recommend to labour organisations throughout this jurisdiction that they so direct their laws as to conform to this resolution by the time named." Previously, workdays would consist of 10 to 16 hours a day - 6 days a week. It would take years before the 8 hour workday became common practice - and longer before it became a law.
