Nelson Victor Hopcraft 1881 - 1963

Nelson Victor Hopcraft of Dromana, Shire of Mornington Peninsula County, VIC Australia was born in 1881 in Dromana to John Hopcraft and Annie Sarah Sawyer Hopcraft. He had siblings Annie Holtham (Hopcraft) Gault, James William Hopcraft, Sarah Lillian (Hopcraft) Wood, Sydney Cecil Ernest Leonard Hopcraft, John Ivan Hopcraft, Flora Helen (Hopcraft) Baldry, Richard Herbert Hopcraft, and Mary Emma (Hopcraft) Miall. He married Florence Emily (Bond) Hopcraft, and had children James Victor Hopcraft, William Francis Hopcraft, and Emily Rebecca Hopcraft. Nelson Hopcraft died at age 81 years old on August 2, 1963 in Flinders, and was buried in August 1963 in Flinders, Mornington Peninsula Shire County.

In 1881, in the year that Nelson Victor Hopcraft was born, on November 19th, a meteorite landed a few miles southwest of Odessa, Ukraine. According to one report: "About 7 o'clock one morning a bright and serpentine tail of fire was seen passing over the town by the inhabitants of Odessa, and M. Prendel, editor of one of the Odessa papers, surmising that the phenomenon betokened a fall of meteorites, offered a reward to any person who would bring him one. Three days afterward a gentleman of Grossliebental brought him one which had been found by a peasant who was nearly frightened out of his senses at its fall. It fell beside him while at work in his field and buried itself .55 meters (almost 2 ft) into the ground." The recovered piece was about 17.5 lbs.

Preparing the first inventory of the United State's natural resources, the commission was divided into four parts: water, forests, lands, and minerals.
