    John Leidy was born on January 25, 1907 in Baltimore, Maryland, United States to parents Samuel Leidy and Ida Meyerhoff Leidy (1886-1970). He graduated from City College and the University of Pennsylvania with a finance degree. After graduation he went to work for the American Cyana Company as manager of the Baltimore sales division. Later, he and his mother founded the chemical company, "Leidy Chemical Company" in 1942. The company sold industrial chemicals to plants in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

    The Baltimore Sun (Baltimore, Maryland) Tuesday, October 27, 1970 Head of Chemical Firm was Active in Charity Work Services for John J. Leidy, who with his mother founded the Leidy Chemical Corporation and was active in charitable organizations, will be held tomorrow 11 A.M. at the Levinson and Brothers funeral establishment, 6010 Reisterstown road. Mr. Leidy, 63, died Sunday at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn. His mother, the former Ida Meyerhoff, died three weeks ago. He was a resident of Roland Park. "His interests centered on his work and charities," a business associate said. A room at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center was named after his first wife, the late Ruth Whitehill Leidy, after he had made a substantial contribution to the hospital. He was also known as a contributor to Provident Hospital, Church Home and Hospital, Sinai Hospital and several other hospitals. The bulk of his estimated $3 million estate has been left to Leidy Chemicals Foundation, a charitable institution, said Thomas A. Strohm, 3d, vice president of the company. Born in Baltimore, he graduated from City College and then the Wharton School of Finance of the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation he went to work for the American Cyana mid Company as manager of its sales division in Baltimore. He and his mother founded the chemical company bearing their name in 1942. Located at 900 South Eutaw street, the company sells industrial chemicals to plants in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. He served in the Army from 1943 to 1945. Mr. Leidy was a member of the board of Church Home and Hospital. He was also a member of the University Club, the Suburban Club, the Baltimore, Chemical Association and the Baltimore Paint and Varnish Association. He was a member of the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy B. Leidy.
