John Kotyk was born to Nicholas Kotyk (1886 - 1955) and Tekla R. "Tessie" Dyrda (1896 - 1935). Both of his parents were born in Austria. He had three brothers: Steven, Joseph, and Edward Kotyk. John married Josephine Svizeny (1921 - 1994). A veteran of the United States Army, Sergeant John Kotyk enlisted in May of 1942 and was discharged in October of 1944, serving during World War II.
