John Leek was born in 1748 in New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut United States. He was married to Hannah Quintard, and had children Isaac Quintard Leake, Peggy Leake, John W. Leake, and Isaac Quintard Leake. John Leek died at age 81 years old on April 24, 1830 in Albany, Albany County, NY, and was buried in April 1830 in Albany.

This John Leek did not have a title at the end of his surname to separate him from his dad. Politically he wanted to stay loyal to King George III of England during the Revolution War era. To "break" ties with that action, he later changed the spelling of his surname to Leake. All direct male descendants from him have spelled it that way since.
