John Lewis Fetters was born on January 22, 1871. He married Mary Alberta (Halderman) Fetters, and they were married until Mary's death in 1896. They had children Cleta Ruhama (Fetters) Howell and Clara Rosetta (Fetters) Howell. He also married Martha E. (Now) Fetters, and they were married until John's death on September 27, 1938. They had children Miriam C. (Fetters) Shirk, Myrtle (Fetters) Evers, Minta C. (Fetters) Ellis, Pearl Savella (Fetters) Zerbe, Norval Chris Fetters, Mildred E. (Fetters) Garwood, Mary (Fetters) Meyer, Dale Lewis Fetters, and John Dillon Fetters.

In 1871, in the year that John Lewis Fetters was born, on March 22nd, William Holden became the first governor of a U.S. state - North Carolina - to be impeached and removed from office. His impeachment and removal was related to charges arising from his attempted suppression of the Ku Klux Klan.

In 1886, John was only 15 years old when on June 13th, the "Great Vancouver Fire" destroyed most of Vancouver, British Columbia. A small brush fire got out of control and spread to the rest of the city. Dozens of people died and it was only after the fire that money was raised for a fire hall. The local Squamish tribe rescued people who had jumped into bodies of water to escape the conflagration.
