John M. Barton Jr. of Helena, Phillips County, ARK USA was born in 1835 to Huldah Rundell and John Barton. He had siblings Daniel Hudson Barton, Lucinda Barton, James C. Barton, Mary Elizabeth Barton, Clara Barton, and Sarah Barton. He married Mildred Elizabeth Sanders, and had children Thomas Jefferson Barton and James Barton. John Barton died at age 27 years old in May 1863.

  • Introduction

    A farmer at Danville in Montgomery County, Missouri. Interested in botany. Married in 1856 to Mildred Sanders. Three children, but some doubt about the paternity of the third child. (See his letters from home.) Enlisted in the 33rd Missouri infantry Volunteers in 1862. Injured his thumb in a shooting accident during training. Stationed at Helena, Arkansas. Probably saw no combat action during the Civil War due to debilitating illness. Drowned in the Mississippi River at Helena in May 1863. His letters from home were saved by another soldier and published in a book called "Bushwhackers and Broken Hearts."
