    The Argus, Melbourne. January 1st 1850. WILFUL MURDER. The inquest on the body of the unfortunate Mr. John McLear, of the River Plenty, who met with his death from the effects of of a blow inflicted by a man named Thos. Mason, was held yesterday, at the Plough Inn....... FIFTY POUNDS REWARD for information to the whereabouts of Thomas Mason.

In 1801, in the year that John McLear. Snr was born, on November 10th, the state of Kentucky outlawed dueling. The oath of office for Kentucky has since said: ""I, being a citizen of this State, have not fought a duel with deadly weapons within this State nor out of it, nor have I sent or accepted a challenge to fight a duel with deadly weapons, nor have I acted as second in carrying a challenge, nor aided or assisted any person thus offending, so help me God."
