He married Dorcas (Burke) on January 18, 1846 at St Giles in the Fields 60 Saint Giles High Street, in Greater London County, England United Kingdom, and had children Alice Dorcas (Newsham), Emma Augusta (Newsham), Helena Frances Newsham, John Edmund Burke Newsham, Arthur Henry Newsham, Sydney Alexander Newsham, Frederick Harold Newsham, Florence Edith Newsham, Alfred Herbert Newsham, and Charles Ernest Newsham. John Newsham died at age 66 years old on August 14, 1893 at Marylebone in Sydney, New South Wales Australia.

In 1827, in the year that John Newsham was born, on May 25th, Romanian inventor Petrache Poenaru received a French patent for the invention of the first fountain pen with a replaceable ink cartridge. The fountain pen would make inkwells obsolete. Poenaru's patent used a barrel made from a large swan quill (part of the feather).
